Searching my old negatives I found this image shot December 1994 in Bucharest Romania. Quite interesting part is the gaze of the man in the right, who is the only one who saw me taking this picture. The film is 100 ASA Azomures (Romanian company producing photographic films) but the grain is due to the film quality and film developing (the chemical used was also by Azomures).

A few weeks ago in London at Saatchi Gallery I saw the work of the Iranian photographer Shadi Ghadirian in the group exhibition "Unveiled: New art from the middle east" 30 Janurary - 9 May 2009:

Shadi was born in Teheran in 1974 in Tehran, Iran. She studied photography and she works in the Museum of Photography of Tehran.

A few days ago the Greek photographer Pericles Antoniou has been arrested in London/UK and sent to court for causing 'public harassment, alarm or distress' after taking and deleting pictures of a young girl in the London underground:

This amazing story reminds me a similar story with me a few years ago. In the photographs that you see in this post are shot in Kiev's train station on 08-May-1997. Because I was taking these photographs I was arrested. The police saw a foreigner with a photo-camera and thought that probably he is a "spy" or a "terrorist" ;-). In the police office I was trying to explain that I am tourist, I am taking photographs as an amateur photographer / "artist" etc etc.

Two days ago I was in a Sunday market in London and I found a kiosk selling photographs of famous photographers ie: Bill Bradt, Robert Doisneau, Annie Liebovitz etc.. Searching the photos I found this photograph that according to the labeling was shot by Henri Cartier Bresson, 1933 in Italy. The concept of this photograph is similar with the concept of a photo of mine that we have already seen in a previous post (August 2002: Dimitris - Samothrace):

The first photograph is interesting because both faces are not visible but it is easy to imagine/"see" the expression of the couple. The second photograph is also interesting but it looks like "folklore" type of photo. The negative of this photo (film) has a many technical problems. Some of them is that the film is TMAX-400 pushed at 1600 and the light conditions are bad (light source at the right / darkness at the left). In order to have this image, I scanned the film several times (appying different exposures) and then I combined the images using HDR (High Dynamic Range) algorithm. The photo is from the "Art center of technology and media - Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM)" in Karlsruhe, Germany. The object in the photo is made of cigarette-packets and in the floor there is a mirror.

The photography is a little bit grainny and foggy. It has grain because it is shot with 400 ASA black & white film / pushed at 1600 ASA. It is foggy because it was a mistake during the film development in the developing tank! Because the tank was not closed well the top part of the film was accidently exposed to the light. In this photograph we see that mostly the top part of the film was exposed (accidently) to the light, and the result was the foggy-effect. This kind of phenomenon is called solarisation or sabattier effect. During solarisation effect here, the dark part of the film become grey/white (foggy effect). This technique has been used a lot by photographer Man Ray.
